Rosenberger OSI installs modern data network in Erdweg elementary and middle school

Cabling specialist supports "DigitalPakt Schule" and brings high-speed Internet into the classroom

Augsburg, May 19 2021 - Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI), expert in fiber-based connectivity, cabling solutions and infrastructure services, has successfully completed a modern cabling project for a school in the Dachau district in April 2021 as part of the federally funded project "DigitalPakt Schule". The new PreCONNECT® smartNET system now provides a future-proof and flexibly expandable network at the Erdweg elementary and middle school.

With the "DigitalPakt Schule" (Digital Pact for Schools), the federal government is supporting the federal states and municipalities in investing in the digital education infrastructure. The aim of the digital pact is to establish a modern comprehensive digital education infrastructure. At the Erdweg elementary and middle school in the district of Dachau (Bavaria), the specific planning called for installing a new type of data network to connect WLAN access points in all rooms and classrooms and other network-related devices such as PCs and laptops. The challenge here was to coordinate the construction measures during ongoing school operations, even if these were limited due to the pandemic. Rosenberger OSI successfully worked hand in hand with local partners on the project, so that the coordination of the individual construction phases and trades went smoothly.

Extensive planning projects

The project started in August 2020 with a site survey and feasibility planning as well as a cost estimate. After the procurement following a restricted public tendering, the next step in January 2021 was the installation of the cable-laying infrastructure, including structural engineering measures such as wall penetrations, the opening of fire bulkheads, and cable-laying and connection work.

Installation of the PreCONNECT® smartNET network

For the cabling infrastructure, Rosenberger OSI relied on its innovative PreCONNECT® smartNET concept, which offers the possibility of dynamically expanding the bandwidth and individually allocating data rates within a building on a departmental or process-related basis. The intelligent concept allows tertiary copper cable lengths to be reduced to a minimum, thereby saving considerable costs compared with classic structured cabling. This is made possible by the use of office distributors, which bring future-proof fiber optic technology closer to the end user.

Future extensions of the cabling are possible

The project was successfully completed in April 2021. There were no restrictions in the limited running of the school. The result: all classrooms and subject rooms were provided with user connections, thus laying the foundation for comprehensive WLAN throughout the entire school teaching area.

“We are pleased to be able to support the DigitalPakt Schule and to have completed the first successful step with the Erdweg elementary and middle school. Thanks to our innovative system smartNET, future extensions of the network will also be possible without any problems,” said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of Rosenberger OSI.

“Digital transformation is no longer a distant future topic, it has long since rapidly gained momentum. This applies to many areas of society and, of course, also to schools. The successful project implementation of the company Rosenberger OSI, forms a reliable infrastructure for the establishment of a comprehensive wireless network in the classrooms of the elementary and middle school,” explains Christian Blatt, mayor of the municipality of Erdweg and 1st chairman of the Erdweg school association.
