#1 RDC | RQC Industrial Connector Check - made easy

OSI Insights in our video-blog

To make the unique advantages of fibre optic technology accessible even in demanding environments, extensive expertise is required. Whether in industry or aviation, telecommunications or broadcasting โ€“ the need for extremely high data throughput, complete resistance to electromagnetic interference, and exceptional robustness is universal. Reliable, high-performance, and future-proof connections are also essential in transport, energy supply, and in defence and security, even under the harshest conditions.

In our Industrial Connector Check โ€“ made easy series, Max Komarow, Product Manager for the industrial sector at Rosenberger OSI, introduces you to the various connectors designed for harsh environments.

In Fokus: RDC | RQC | RQC Hybrid

Rosenberger has specially developed the RDC and RQC connectors for the telecommunications sector and for use in industrial applications. They therefore have a wide range of potential uses, for example

  • Cabling for wireless networks or in antenna technology in the telecommunications field
  • Infrastructures for industrial automation
  • Rail technology
  • Energy supply applications, for example for offshore wind plants
  • In safety systems
  • Broadcasting
  • And many other areas

Duplex and Quad Connector

As the names say, Rosenbergerโ€™s Duplex and Quad Connectors have either two โ€“ Duplex โ€“ or four โ€“ Quad โ€“ optical fibres or fibre optic contacts. When inserted, these contacts form a physical front contact and ensure that the optical fibres are optimally aligned thanks to the use of high-precision ceramic contacts and centering sleeves for optimum, low-loss signal transmission.

Installation

Installation is simple and can be done in just a few steps.

1. Remove the protective cap from the connector.
2. Insert the connector into the receptacle.
3. Ensure that the keying is right and tighten the coupling nut to lock.

This method ensures that the optical fibres are perfectly seated.

Environment Requirements

Once plugged together, they provide first-class fiber optic connectivity. What is more, they have a robust design which means they keep on working even in extreme weather conditions. This is because the waterproof construction of the connector and receptacle provides protection against

  • Rain
  • Moisture
  • Dust
  • Dirt
  • Snow
  • Ice

Addionally, they can withstands extreme temperatures from -40 to 85 degrees in combination with the assembled cable.

Compliance with Industry Standards

The connectors were developed on the basis of an industrial standard in order to meet the most demanding requirements, while also providing a compatible external interface.

Components

The connectorโ€™s main components consist of a robust housing with a coupling nut for the screw-lock connection. This has a special thread geometry to prevent unintentional release, e.g. when subject to vibrations, and a cable-crimp connection for high-strength connector/cable connections.

RQC Hybrid

We decided to make a clever modification for a broadcasting application by adding electrical contacts and using this as the basis to create a hybrid variant. The RQC Hybrid Connector. This solution, which combines optical fibres and electrical contacts, provides a low-voltage direct current, for example for converters for cameras or other devices via the hybrid cable.

Features

  • Different connector variants: Male, female, receptacle - in Singlemode PC and APC variants
  • Multimode Low IL
  • Very good IL and RL performance values thanks to high-precision components
  • Robust protective caps for reliable installation on site
  • High IP67 ingress protection when inserted or locked
  • In the future, this will also be extended to IP68
  • High mechanical stability
  • 500 mating cycles and adaptation to different cable types and diameters
