#3 Industrial Connector Check - made easy | Q-RMC

OSI Insights in our video-blog

To make the unique advantages of fibre optic technology accessible even in demanding environments, extensive expertise is required. Whether in industrial automation and monitoring systems or telecommunications – the need for extremely high data throughput, complete resistance to electromagnetic interference, and exceptional robustness is universal. Reliable, high-performance, and future-proof connections are also essential in rail technology and the transport sector and energy supply, even under the harshest conditions.

In our Industrial Connector Check – made easy series, Max Komarow, Product Manager for the industrial sector at Rosenberger OSI, introduces you to the various connectors designed for harsh environments.

In Focus: Q-RMC | Rosenberger Multifiber Connector

Rosenberger’s Q-RMC solution is a robust, weatherproof, multifibre fibre optic plug connector that has been designed first and foremost for outdoor applications. Its technical characteristics make it particularly suitable for applications with exacting requirements in terms of toughness, weather-resistance, ease-of-use, high data rates and an extremely compact design.

Fields of applications:

  • Rail technology and the transport sector
The Q-RMC is suitable for use in trains and along sections of track where stable connections have to be provided under demanding conditions. Thanks to its resistance to vibrations and UV radiation, this plug connector is suitable for use in rail vehicles and in all types of transport applications.
  • Industrial automation and monitoring systems
The Q-RMC provides robust connectivity for industrial outdoor surveillance cameras and is able to cope with extreme environmental conditions, for example dust, moisture and fluctuating temperatures. It can also be used to interface machine networks where very high data rates are required.
  • Energy generation and distribution companies (for example wind and solar power installations)
Outdoor energy generation installations, such as wind or solar power plants, often use fibre optic technology for data transmission. The Q-RMC is ideal for tough environments and helps ensure secure, low-maintenance connections.
  • Telecommunications
FTTA is a key technology in modern wireless networks and helps guarantee a direct fibre optic connection through to the antenna. The Q-RMC can be used in this sector because it has been specially designed for outdoor use.

Q-RMC | Rosenberger Multifibre Connector

This multifibre technology, which currently supports up to twelve fibres, is equipped with an MT ferrule and can therefore be used to adapt multiple optical fibres in even the most confined spaces. When connected, these multifibre ferrules form a physical contact. The ferrule is available in the standard PC variant or as an obliquely cut APC variant for a high return loss. We make use of the very best components that are available on the market and achieve outstanding transmission values on all twelve fibres.

Together with the tough metal components and the push-pull locking mechanism, this connector system can be connected easily, quickly and without the need for any tools, meaning that it meets the most exacting requirements during live use.

Connector types

Q-RMC male for connecting and for mobile use, optionally also available as Q-RMC female.
This combination gives customers the outstanding flexibility they need for their cabling.
The Q-RMC receptacle is easy to mount at a housing or terminal device using four screws.

Installation

  • The Q-RMC male can be inserted quickly and easily at the receptacle.
  • A tactile and visual marking makes it very easy to align the elements.
  • The click indicates that the plug connector is securely locked.
  • Whether plugged or loose, the connectors are highly resistant to mechanical stresses and are protected against the weather, for example when pulling in cables for connections through dirty, wet areas. The protective caps are easy to remove but also remain undetachable. They can also be connected together to prevent them from being contaminated during operation.

To meet all the customer’s requirements, it is also vital to choose the right cable. That is why we look closely at the customer’s requirements and offer them the right Q-RMC connector system together with the right cable.

Features

  • Robust design and high ingress protection classes, IP 67 and up to IP 68 in the future
  • UV-resistance and resistance to  vibrations, shocks and moisture
  • Easy to install without tools reduces effort and saves a lot of time on site
  • Extremely compact design with a small external diameter of 18 millimetres and an MT ferrule with up to twelve fibres
  • High chemical resistance against salt mist, oils and much more

To summarise, the Q-RMC from Rosenberger is an ideal solution for outdoor fibre optic connections in tough environments, and in particular for applications that demand very high data transmission rates and outstanding resistance to environmental conditions.
