#2 Industrial Connector Check - made easy | Heavy Duty 600

OSI Insights in our video-blog

To make the unique advantages of fibre optic technology accessible even in demanding environments, extensive expertise is required. Whether in broadcast sector, for the oil and gas industry or in mining – the need for extremely high data throughput, complete resistance to electromagnetic interference, and exceptional robustness is universal. Reliable, high-performance, and future-proof connections are also essential in many industrial applications, even under the harshest conditions.

In our Industrial Connector Check – made easy series, Max Komarow, Product Manager for the industrial sector at Rosenberger OSI, introduces you to the various connectors designed for harsh environments.

In Focus: Heavy Duty 600

It’s not only the large, solid construction that makes the Heavy Duty 600 different from our RDC and RQC connectors. It also differs thanks to its hermaphroditic design. It has been specially developed for the broadcasting sector. It is also suitable for:

  • industrial applications, such as industrial automation, for example or for use in industrial robots
  • oil and gas industry, for example on offshore platforms
  • mining
  • and wherever high data rates have to be transmitted in tough environments

This is because the Heavy Duty 600 is equipped with six ferrules. The ferrule is a high-precision ceramic component in which the optical fibre is glued in place. In this connector system, it has been designed to have a fairly large external diameter in order to provide additional protection against vibrations, mechanical loads or when being plugged in. Thanks to the hermaphroditic design developed by Rosenberger, reduces the variety of products for the customer. Especially when cascading or adapting.

What does hermaphroditic mean?

A hermaphroditic connector system describes a particular type of plug connection. It combines both male and female properties in a single connector. In conventional connector systems, there is usually one connector (male) and one receptacle (female). By contrast, hermaphroditic connectors can be directly connected to one another without it being necessary to distinguish between male and female.

Installation

1. Remove the protective cap
2. Screw the coupling nut backwards anticlockwise until we can see a good amount of the threaded sleeve.
This reveals a surface onto which the connector opposite can be screwed.
3. remove the protective cap from the connector opposite
4. Screw the coupling nut clockwise, so that the threaded sleeve disappears inside
5. Align the semicircular sections shapes with one another
6. Plug the connectors together
7. Tighten the plug connection using the coupling nuts
8. Lock the whole assembly using the coupling nuts

When plugged in, the light signal is transmitted optimally at the sensitive key points by a physical contact. The solid, circular, high-quality metal housing protects the components against environmental influences and mechanical stresses, such as vibrations and shocks.

We not only have the right cable for these applications, but also the right protective cap. This enables us to create high tensile strength through a sophisticated connector-cable crimping solution. As a result, laying and pulling in the cables in installations and very tough environments is no longer a problem.

Our protective caps are also designed to be so robust that they provide additional protection for the connectors against damage caused by falls and impacts. They are easy to remove but remain undetachable from the assembly. They can also be connected together in order to prevent them from being contaminated during operation.

The connector’s main components

  • Connector body
  • Semicircular section
  • Robust coupling nut
  • PG screw connection for kink protection

The semicircular section can also be removed on-site to permit  easy cleaning.

Features

  • Receptacle for the device side
  • Similar connector due to a hermaphrodite design
  • 5000 mating cycles without cleaning
  • Singlemode and Multimode with very low IL values
  • With APC cut for high RL values
  • Robust and captive protective caps
  • Removable connector parts for ease of cleaning on-site
  • Additional protective leather sleeves available as an option
  • Dust and waterproof to IP67
  • Operating temperatures from -40°C to +85°C degrees as standard version
