Rosenberger OSI adds MMC connectors for high-density fibre optic cabling to its connector portfolio

Very small form factor technology for data centres and next-generation networks

Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI), a European manufacturer of innovative fibre-optic cabling infrastructures, is expanding its portfolio with the MMC connector (Miniature Multifibre Connector). The high-performance Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) solution has been specifically developed for high-density fibre optic cabling, addressing the increasing demands of modern data centres, telecommunications networks, 5G infrastructures and FTTx environments. The MMC connector supports migrations to 400G, 800G, 1.6TB and, in the near future, 3.2TB.

Compact form factor for maximum port density

The MMC connector features a particularly small form factor, which is even smaller than established multi-fibre connectors such as MPO. This allows more fibres to be accommodated per panel front surface, making efficient use of the available installation space in patch fields and active IT hardware. The push-pull mechanism also enables secure insertion and removal even at maximum port density.

Designed for high-performance requirements

As a VSFF category multi-fibre array connector, the MMC is equipped with Tiny MT ferrules (TMT) and is available in 1x12, 2x12 or 1x16 fibre variants. The ferrules with a 250 Β΅m pitch are designed for singlemode and multimode fibres and are manufactured to Elite quality standards. An 8Β° APC polish ensures very high return loss values of up to 60 dB in single-mode operation.

The maximum insertion loss is 0.35 dB for singlemode and multimode fibres and meets the requirements of IEC 61300-3-4. The mechanical design allows for at least 500 mating cycles, ensuring consistently stable optical performance.

Robust design for practical use

Despite its miniature design, the MMC connector has a robust housing with central cable support, integrated strain relief and kink protection for round cables with a diameter of 2.0 to 2.5 mm. With an operating temperature range of -40 Β°C to +75 Β°C, the connector is qualified for use in demanding environments such as data centres and network infrastructures.

Extensive cable portfolio for 800G migrations

Rosenberger OSI offers the MMC connector as part of a comprehensive product range that includes patch, fan-out and trunk cables. These solutions support the gradual transition to high-speed applications with up to 800 Gbit/s, enabling future-proof migration of existing fibre optic infrastructures.

Standard-compliant and future-oriented

The MMC connector meets the requirements of Telcordia GR-1435 and is designed for maximum reliability and long-term stability. β€œWith this solution, we are addressing the increasing demands on packing density, performance and scalability in modern fibre optic networks,” says Harald JungbΓ€ck, Product Manager at Rosenberger OSI.
