Even after using a passive network for a long period, almost every business is at some stage confronted with the fact that the network cabling needs to be revitalized because the requirements have changed over time. In such cases, a switch-over to FTTACP is possible at any time. This is because the PerCONNECT® EcoFlex'IT™ building cabling solution is practically independent of the existing cable infrastructure and is installed independently of the existing fire protection. It can therefore be installed without difficulty in parallel with the existing network infrastructure.
The FTTACP network can be integrated at any time in an existing structured cabling solution. Consequently, the existing solution does not necessarily have to be removed and it is possible for the two structures to coexist in an overall network without any problem. PerCONNECT® EcoFlex'IT™ makes use of active and passive standard components that are also available and used for structured networks.
FTTACP permits flexible network construction that is suitable for all building structures and uses – irrespective of whether this is in an old or new building, or an office, sales or industrial space. The innovative cabling architecture is also perfect for new buildings with as yet unknown usage and undefined users. What is more, it requires no building-level conversion measures for network extensions or switch-overs and is therefore also ideal for existing buildings that offer little scope for modifications. The FTTACP concept is independent of network size and can therefore be used for very small or campus networks as well as for standalone solutions or in combination with conventional structured cabling.
Speeds in the backbones of LAN networks will also increase in the future. Using an FTTACP network, it is now already possible to take preventive measures to keep pace with this development by planning for the use of single-mode fibers, or at least by using multimode fibers in OM4 quality. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the ACP is equipped with at least 8 fibers (4 channels) for future parallelized applications. Multiple ACP switches are usually integrated in the FTTACP structures. Every ring has an optical fiber connection and a redundant optical fiber connection to the building’s main distributor or to a redundant main distributor. In essence, a ring represents a shared medium for all the connected office workstations as well as for all other IP applications. At 100Mbit/s, the performance is generally more than adequate for normal office workstations. If genuine power workstations with higher data throughput are needed, then this sector can be separated from the ring without difficulty and be added to the overall system as a separate, high-performance ring.
