Rosenberger OSI modernises data centre cabling at REWE Group

Future-proof fibre optic infrastructure for 400G to 1.6Tbit/s

Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI), manufacturer of innovative fibre optic cabling infrastructures in Europe, has modernised the data centre cabling at three REWE Group locations. The company used Rosenberger OSI's future-proof fibre optic technology, which enables bandwidths of up to 1.6 Tbit/s and ensures long-term operation.

The core of the project was the introduction of 400GBASE-DR4-QSFP-DD single-mode transceivers with SN quad optical interfaces. These components enable high bandwidths while reducing cabling costs. The technology was supplemented by a new single-mode infrastructure that prepares for expansion to higher speeds such as 800 Gbit/s or 1.6 Tbit/s. The modernisation of all three locations, including project planning, was completed within six weeks.

Efficient architecture with Arista switches

A key element of this architecture is the integration of Arista switches, the ports of which are mirrored on LC duplex patch panels (CPL). This architecture reduces the number of connections near the switches, thereby lowering both costs and signal losses. Factory-assembled SN trunk cables featuring the latest ‘SN EZ-Flip’ SN connector design were also used. These cables allow the polarity to be changed on site without the risk of breaking fibres.

Flexibly expandable patch distributor solution

A PreCONNECT® SMAP-G2 SD, which occupies 2U and features a low fire load due to its plastic-reduced design, serves as the patch distributor. The modular 19-inch housing system enables partial front panels to be removed without tools and additional ports to be retrofitted. This allows network infrastructures to be quickly adapted to new standards during subsequent technology updates without the need for complete replacement.

Investment protection and sustainability

The solution increases performance and protects existing resources. Thanks to its modular design and the option to combine fibre optic and copper cabling, it remains usable in the long term, supporting the REWE Group's sustainability goals.

“With the new fibre optic network, REWE has created a flexible, service-friendly and expandable solution. It not only enables current 400G applications, but also paves the way for future generations of data centre technologies,” says Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of Rosenberger OSI.
