Assembled polarization-maintaining connectors for telecommunications, quantum communications, and data centres
Rosenberger Optical Solutions & Infrastructure (Rosenberger OSI), manufacturer of innovative fibre optic cabling infrastructures in Europe, presents the first assembled products based on PANDA fibre. This special fibre enables stable polarization of the transmitted light and, making it particularly well suited for demanding applications in telecommunications, quantum physics, and modern data centres.
Unlike standard fibres, PM (polarization maintaining) fibres have additional stress elements in the optical cladding. These elements ensure that linearly polarized light is reliably maintained in two directions (fast axis and slow axis), even when the fibre is subjected to mechanical or thermal stress.
Precision in assembly: challenge and expertise
The technical challenge lies in precisely aligning of the stress elements on intersecting fibres. Even the slightest deviation can result in significant losses, and high precision is crucial to ensure signal quality. Rosenberger OSI has developed special expertise in this area to enable high-precision assembly of multi-fibre connectors (EBOs) with PM fibres. “This makes Rosenberger OSI the first supplier of PM EBOs on the market. The result is stable polarization and low losses, even under demanding conditions,” explains Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of Rosenberger OSI.
